Wightman Sugar Bush

Hosts: Jim / Cheryl Wightman

The sugar bush has been owned by the Wightman’s since 1937. Prior to that syrup was made on the property up until the 1930’s by the Grant family then not again until 1985 when a gravity tubing system was installed. Jim has been making syrup since he was 9 years old, when he and his younger brother tapped 40 trees around the house and boiled the sap down on an old wood fired kitchen stove which was set up in the bush. In 1978, Jim began making maple syrup with a friend and then in 2011 Jim opened his own modernized maple operation. He currently has 4700 taps on a high vacuum system, a forced air wood fired evaporator with automatic take-off, reverse osmosis equipment, a filtration system, bottling system, as well as maple butter & maple candy machines. Our syrup products have travelled to all seven continents (including Antarctica). In Nov 2016, Wightman Sugar Bush competed at the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto and placed in the top 6 of 4 categories.
